CRITICAL ACTION
PORTENTS IN BURMA TENGCHUNG* RETAKEN KANDY, Sept. 14. The Fourteenth Army is now moving forward to probably critical action in pursuit of the Japanese after gaining 120 miles on the Tiddim road, says the Associated Press correspondent. The delaying actions of the Japanese 33rd Division for the past two months have been to gain time and strengthen the natural defences covering the Manipur River crossings, four miles north of Tonzang. The hills through which the roacl winds to the river are honeycombed with bunkers and foxholes. Japanese artillery is already in action against the Fifth Indian Division on the outer defence system. The British are replying with guns and aircraft.
Liberators of the Eastern Air Command yesterday raided Moulmein railway station, scoring hits on the railway yard, warehouses and jetties. Beaufighters on Tuesday attacked the Mandalay-Lashio railway and damaged locomotives and rolling-stock. The Chungking Central News Agency reports that the Chinese have recaptured Tengchung and wiped out over 3000 Japanese troops.
