CALL TO GISBORNE
DISTRICT LAGS BEHIND POOR RESULTS SO FAR Disappointment with the results of the Victory Loan appeal in the oisborne district was expressed at a meeting of the local committee yesterday afternoon. It was pointed out that, despite the. energetic campaign conducted by the committee and the uimerous activities that had. been arranged, the district remained at the joltom of the list of quota percenages subscribed. ... N. The chairman, Mr. M. J. White, said that if this district, which in the past iad always responded so well to national appeals, was to play its pan in this effort there would have to be a substantial increase in the rate of support. With the first fortnight of the campaign nearly ended and oiuy three more weeks to go, the district had only subscribed 15 per cent of its quota. It could not be too strongly stressed that assistance towards this loan was a responsibility upon the boulders of all sections of the community in proportion to their means. Mr. White expressed satisfaction that the committee’s representations in regard to the allocation of wool retention money _had, in part at least, met with satisfactory results . This noant that contributions by. farmers, either voluntary or compulsory, to the oan would be credited to the district in which they resided. He Pbihted out that by taking inscribed stock an the loan farmers secured ail ment of assured value, while the death duty stock, since it always retained its face value for death duty purposes, was an attractive investment toi. elderly subscribers. A variety of attractions will be staged to-day and to-morrow the concluding days ol Navy Week. This evening, in conjunction with the City Band, there will be a parade of naval ratings and at 1 o’clock there will be i free open-air picture show at the Gladstone-road-Peel street corner. The naval vessel now in port Will be open to inspection by _ the public tomorrow afternoon. Appreciation ot the assistance already given by naval ratings in selling bonds was expressed by the committee. j / ' , ‘One urgent need that was reported to the committee was that of women bond-sellers to assist the street campaign. It was stated that the re sponsc so far had been disappointing and an appeal was made for volunteers to give assistance for a lew hours on one day during the campaign.
