DEMOCRATIC CAMPAIGN (10 a.m.) NEW YORK. May 9 Firing the opening shots in the campaign to re-elect President Roosevelt, the Democratic national chairman, Mr. Robert Hannegan, and Senator Barkley in speeches at the annual Jefferson Day dinner, hailed the President’s leadership, accepted Mr. Thomas L. Dewey as the Repuolican opponent, and criticised the latter’s views on .foreign affairs. Mr. Hannegan pictured Mr. Roosevelt “as fit and ready for the fight, despite malicious rumours to the contrary.” He added: “The people of the United States are determined that Mr. Roosevelt shall complete the assignment which Destiny gave him.”
