WOMEN WORKERS
VEGETABLE PRODUCTION PROXIMITY TO JAPANESE (P.R.) WELLINGTON, March 15. The unpleasantness and eiribarrassment caused to young women engaged in vegetable production through having to work alongside Japanese prisoners of war was the subject 6,f a notice of question by Mr G. H. M'ackley (Opp., Masterton) in the House of Representatives' yesterday! It was directed to the Minister pf Labour, the Hon. P. G. Webb, who was asked whether he would take steps for the protection of these workers. Mr Mackley also asked the Minister whether he would arrange to see that the girls were riot placed at a disadvantage in respect to working hours as compared with the Japanese. He said a case had been represented to him to the effect that female university students' recently man-powered under the 1 " Government vegetable project at Greytqwn, were subjected to the ordeal of working in the same paddock within a few “yards of Japanese prisoners of \yar. .! Mr Machley also’ asked for an inquiry into the demands for £1 union fees from these' students, who were told that it would be deducted by the vh’ari-p'owef.; officer if they failed to pay withjn a "certain date.
