BROKEN MARRIAGES

HIGH AUSTRALIAN RATE CANBERRA, March 13. Marriage is one of Australia’s most serious war casualties. The number of divorces has shown a steady increase since the outbreak of war. Figures compiled by the Commonwealth Statistician show that the petitions rose from 4336 in 1939 to 4470 in 1941. With returns from only four of the six States available for 1942, the total is already 4714. In New South Wales, divorces granted in 1942 were 1606, more than doubling the figure for 1939.
