SEVERAL UPSETS
1P.A.1 DUNEDIN, Jan. U. The weather was dull and uninviting when play was resumed*in the howling championships this morning. Some ruin fell, hut it was not sufficient to halt early games. The whole day was devoted to the balance of the section play in tin pairs competition. 52 sections being engaged on 2d greens, till the entrants taking part in four games.
In the first rouiid, Booth and Long-worth, Tainui, just got home, 18-17, against Breen and Thomson. Wnikiwi. The St. Clair pair skipped by Fisher, a former Otago and New Zealand cricketer, had an even tussle with Bennett and Taylor Keanton, Timaru, winning- 2;t-I". Foster and Taplin, Auckland Transport, registered ii win of 21-14 against O'Neill and Bain, Marlborough R.S.A. MeMenchnn and Wesney, North End, well-known Southland players, had the decisive nmrgin of 2:1-10 over Bellringer and Fluker, Paitutu. The Carlton pair. MiCul.lough amt Donaidson, accounted for Rutherford ami Gladding, Si. Kiltlu, 22-111. Letmie and Donaldson. Piuisonby, had a good winn over Smart and Gibson. Shirley. 2(1-8.
Adess, a popular name in Otago howling, skipped a St. Kilda pair which . defeated Burt and McGrath. Alexandra. 23-lii. kenwood representatives. Archer and IMlpnth. went down S-19 to the Roslyn pair, Armstrong and McKay. •
There was another upset with the defeat of Gardner and Anderson, Portobello, by Findlay and Ross, Carlton. 22-10. Anderson has had many centre successes and skipped the South Island championship rink in 1939. Whittaker and Deare, Carlton, had little difficulty in disposing of Meehan and Lamb. Wellington. 24-10. Lindsay and Tyrrell. Roslyn. also had a comfortable win of 24-12 from Mac Nickel and Henderson, Awnmoa. Ellis and Keilar, Katkdrai, recorded one of the easiest wins of the morning in Leafing Reese and Laws, United, 27-5. A Canterbury pair skipped by Ti. Munn. who has been a member of three championship teams, accounted for Butterfield and Rofton, Kaikorai, 19-IG. There was a further surprise when Archer, who skipped the winning, pailin 1937, and Hawken, Hamilton, hhd to lower their colours to Bell and Marshal! Anderson’s Bay, 15-21.
