DEEPEST YET
FIGHTER PENETRATION RAIDS OVER GERMANY (10 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 14. American Flying Fortress bombers attacking north-western Germany in daylight yesterday met some of the heaviest flak yet encountered. It was concentrated along an eight-mile stretch of the route.
One pilot said that, although clouds partly obscured the targets, the bombs went down in a beautiful pattern. Afterwards, two smoke columns rose through the clouds. Escorting Thunderbolts and Lightnings made the deepest fighter penetration yet into Germany. Fifteen enemy planes were destroyed, the bombers accounting for 14 of them. The Allied losses yesterday were five heavy bombers, two medium bombers and two fighters. The Berlin radio says that the American bombers dropped bombs indiscriminately through the thick cloud on several north-west coastal towns, and residential quarters were hit.
Mosquitos of the Bomber Command, without loss, attacked objectives in western Germany.
