TERRITORIAL CAMPS

CALL-UP IN DISTRICT FIRST LOT IN JANUARY LABOUR FOR HARVESTING Notices have been posted to men selected in the Gisborne district for posting to the Territorial Force. These men will be mobilised for one month’s training, and as their services may be used to assist in harvesting operations they will be required to enter camp mainly during January, February or March. It is understood that the first lot of men from the Gisborne district will be required in January, but so far fanners of the district have not made msnv applications for assistance of Territorial labour. It is not known vet what avenue will be found for those men who are not required for harvesting in the district, whether they will go to other districts or will bo retained for purely military training. Men in the Wellington district will be sent largely to the South Island. A statement on the position of appeals has been made from Wellington. this being to the effect that while the right oC appeal had been given against territorial’ training, it was not desired that appeals should be lodged merelv [or the purpose of obtaining a short postponement of entry into camo: arrangements could be made with the commanding officer of the unit, or the area office, for a postponement in cases where this was justified. Appeals against out-of-camp training should not be lodged either, because in the meantime it was not proposed to commence such training. While it is appreciated that the release of men for one month in camp will cause some inconvenience to employers, it is imperative that these men should be released so as to ensure that the necessary assistance is made available for the purpose of gathering the harvest, which is so vital to the Dominion’s food production programme.
