SEVERE FIGHTING

CHINESE REPULSE JAPS. (10 a.m.) CHUNGKING, Nov. 24. Severe fighting west south, and east of the vital rice bowl town - of Changteh is announced by the Chinese communique. Chinese forces using hand grenades and bayonets in close-quarter fighting repulsed a Japanese attack which was launched under aircraft and artillery cover. The Chinese threw back enemy forces attempting to by-pass Changteh, thereby cutting the highway linking Changsha. Japanese paratroops dropped on the outskirts of Tatyuan, 16 miles south of Changteh, were wiped out.
