Westport Railway Line Present indications are that the Railways Department will assume control of the Westport line during the first week of December. The Hottest Day Yesterday Gisborne experienced the hottest day so far this summer, the maximum temperature reading in the afternoon being 81.3 degrees. The previous hottest day was 77.2 degrees on November 8.
Tuberculosis Treatment
An objection to the Cook Hospital Board’s proposal to apply for a loan of £17,500 for additions to its tuberculosis block was recorded at a meeting of the Waikohu County Council to-day. Members agreed that the objection should be on the ground that the matter was a national problem and that the cost should not fall on only a section of the people.
Specialised Theft A thief removed the crown wheel and pinion from a light motor car at Auckland, but did not take any other parts or fittings. The loss of his car was reported by the owner to the police last week and the vehicle was eventually recovered in an eastern suburb. The car was standing on blocks and an expert job had been made with the removal of the large gear. When found the car was still fitted with tyres, which are more commonly sought by thieves.
“Property Register” At the request of the Rehabilitation Board, the State Advances Corporation has established a “property register” for the purpose of recording particularly farm properties which are offered by owners and trustees for sale to ex-servicemen. Details of any properties which owners or trustees might consider suitable for purchase by returned servicemen should be furnished to the branch .manager of the State Advances Corporation at Napier. Loan finance is available within certain limits to enable exservicemen to make up propetries under the rehabilitation scheme.
Shoes For Women in the Services “Most progressive and comprehensive,” said the Minister of Supply, the Hon.- D. G, Sullivan, when commenting on the footwear and chiropody scheme for women employed in the Army, Navy and Air Force, and the National Service Department, “After operating for live months, reports received from all over New Zealand are most satisfactory, and indicate that the scheme will prove beneficial to all concerned. The plan was introduced with the co-operation of the orthopaedic surgeons .and the footwear manufacturers throughout the country. The preparation and execution were planned by the Director of Production and the Ministry of Supply, in co-operation with members of the.armed services.” Four fitting and chiropody depots, one in each of the main centres, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, were set up. From each of these depots a mobile unit operates, covering all the country camps and stations.
