AIMED AT JAPAN

CENTRAL PACIFIC PUSH TWO MAIN OBJECTIVES no navaiTresistance (10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Nov. 23. “The American invasion of the Gilbert Islands marks the beginning of a new drive aimed directly at Japan across the central Pacific,” the Secretary of the Navy, Colonel F. Knox, stated to-day. He explained that the drive had two immediate strategic objectives, first, to drive the enemy from the Japanese mandated islands, and, secondly, to shorten toy hundreds of miles the American supply lines in the south-west Pacific. He added that so far no elements of the Japanese fleet had appeared to oppose the landings in the Gilbert Islands. He believed the nearest Japanese fleet in any strength was at Truk.
