ZAPOROZHE FALLS RUSSIAN ASSAULTS BATTLES IN MELITOPOL ADD RUSSIA aow a hi LONDON, Oct. 14. The capture of Zaporozhe, a regional Ukraine centre, was announced by Marshal Stalin in an order of the day which described the town as a major industrial centre, an important railways, waterways, and communications centre, and one of the Germans’ most important defence points in the southern reaches of the Dnieper. To-night’s Soviet communique says the Russians overcame fierce resistance and took Zaporozhe by assaults. Thus the enemy bridgehead on the left bank of the Dnieper has been liquidated. The communique adds that the Russian troops are engaged in stubborn street battles in Melitopol. The Germans are suffering enormous losses of man-power and equipment. The railway line linking Melitopol with the Crimea is cut in two places. Melitopol is thus isolated from the Theßussians on the middle Dnieper on the right bank north and south ot Kiev have considerably improved their positions. Big operations tor the extension of the bridgeheads on the right bank of the River So]l north and south of Gomel are continuing.
