ALLIES PRESSING GERMANS BACK

EIGHTH ARMY CAPTURES VINCHIATURO LANDING BEHIND NAZI LINES CONFIRMED (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) (10.30 a.in.) RUGBY. Oct. 15, The battle of Volturno is assuming gigantic proportions, according to press messages from Allied Headquarters. The Germans have a valuable ally in the swollen river and wet weather and hold the high ground dominating the battlefield. They are lighting with the -greatest determination, giving up ground only with the greatest reluctance. Nevertheless, a message received this morning from Lieutenant-General Clark’s Fifth Army shows that the Allies are pushing back the enemy from the sea to the Appenines. Allied tanks and guns continue to pour across the Volturno River and our bridgeheads are well established, according to late dispatches from front-line correspondents.

The United Nations’ Radio at Algiers quotes semi-official reports that Vinehiaturo has been captured but the Cairo radio says that the Eighth Army now is eight miles beyond Vinchiaturo. The Fifth Army .has already established many bases on the northern bank of the Volturno River and is building bridges at a number of^points.

It is officially announced that the Allies have landed on the Italian west coast beyond the Volturno line. The Berlin radio stated that the New Allied landing was made near Castel Volturno on the north shore of the Volturno River estuary.
