PARTY AND INDEPENDENT Additional candidates for the general election have been announced as follows: Auckland East.—At the request of the national executive of the Democratic Labour Party, Mrs! J. A. Lee has agreed not to contest Auckland East as was her intention, but to make a tour of New Zealand on behalf of all candidates of the party. The Democratic Labour candidate for Auckland East will now be FlyingOfficer L. S. Dromgoole, aged 31, a graduate in commerce from Canterbury University College. Before the v;ar Fl.ving-Officer Dromgoole was employed in the Public Trust Office and was secretary of the Wanganui branch of the Public Service Association. I-Ic has seen service in Malaya and Java.
Remuera.- —Flying-Officer E. W. Sinton will contest Remuera as an Independent sponsored by the People’s Movement. Aged 37, Flying-Officer Sinton ig an Auckland business man and was vice-president: of the Bureau of Importers at the time of volunteering for service with R.N.Z.AiF. Auckland West,-— Staff-Sergeant H. M. Bagriall will, contest the Auckland West seat with the support, of. the People’s Movement. Before entering the Army, he was connected with-the transport industry in Auckland anil Wellington. New Plymouth.—Mr. L. A. Jury, farmer, of Br'ixton, near New Plymouth, has been nominated as the Democratic Labour candidate for the New Plymouth seat. There are now four candidates. .
Wellington East.—-Mr. A. C. Barrington has announced his intention or standing as a Christian Pacifist for Wellington East, at present held by Uie Hon. R. Semple.' He is a lay preacher of the Methodist Church. Wellington Soul’ll. —Mr. T.O.Maddison will contest the Wellington South seat as an Independent. He contested Buffer in 1938 for the National Party Mi dr Canter bury.—Mr. R. G, Gerard will be the National candidate tpr, Mid-Canterbury, at. present held for the party' by Mrs. W. J- Poison, formerly Mrs. A. N. Grigg, who is. not seeking re-election. Aged 32, Mr. Gerard was educated at Christs, College. He is a member, of the Dominion executive of. the Farmers' Union, and is North and Mid-Canter-bury representative on the Meat Producers’ Board, chairman of the. district primary production council and a member of the. committee., of,the IVlethven Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Mr. R. H. Bates, a sawmill owner, of Temuka. will: contest Mid-Canterbury for the Derpochatic Labour Party. Born, at Invercargill *>j) years ago, Mr. Bates is a wGliknown professional boxer. Rotorua.—Mix' T. G. Burnham will contest the Rotorua seat in the interests, of the Real Democracy Movement. Born' in ‘ ‘Warwickshire and educated at Northampton Grammar School, Mr, Burnham went to Australia in 1923 and' engaged in the timber industry and in farming m Northern Queensland, He came to New Zealand in 1929 , and is at present employed with the State Forest Service at Rotorua. Masterton. — Captain Justin Power has agreed to contest the Mastertou. seat as an Independent sponsored by the People’s Movement. Aged 4J, Captain Power served for four years in the last war and went overseas with the Second Echelon in this war, returning to Now Zealand after Uvo years. I-lc was mentioned in despatches for distinguished service ni the field in 1942. Tic has represented Auckland at Rugby. . Matiurii.— The Gore branch of the, Labour Tarty has announced that no Labour candidate will be nominated to oppose the sitting member for Mataura. Lieutenant T. L. Macdonald. (National), who is on active service overseas. rt , „ „ Onehunga.—Aircraftman T. E. Sommcfviilc has been chosen to contest the Onehunga seat on behalf of the Real Democracy Movement. He was born at Orielumga 35 years ago and was educated at the Onehunga Primary and Auckland Grammar Schools'. Before joining the Air Force he. was for 19 years on the staff of the Lands and Survey Department in Auckland. His home is at Onehunga. Auckland Suburbs, —Mr. J. Williams has announced that he. will contest Auckland Suburbs as an Independent “Savage” Labour candidate, Mr. Williams was president of the Avondale branch of the Labour Party for four years and is chairman of the. Avondale School Committee. Northern Maori—After being approached by members of several tribes, Mr. D. W. Taylor, of liokianga, has agreed, to contest the Northern Maori seat as an Independent. Mr. Taylor has been a keen worker in the interests of his people and contested Northern Maori as an Independent m 1935. Ho served in the last. war. Wallace. —Three candidates are in fhe field for the Wallace seat, the latest being Mr. Patrick J. McMullan. of Invercargill, who recently returned to civil life after service as a pilot in the Royal New Zealand Air Force overseas. He will contest the seat as an Independent. The other candidates are the Hon. A. Hamilton (National), •m, i M'\ J. J. Lynch ■ (Labour). Mr. McMullan, who is 25, is on the staff of an Invercargill firm,
