AUGUST 24 OR 25 LONG HOURS AHEAD! SECURITY BILL IN OFFING (P.R.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. The Prime Minister, the HI. Hon. P. Fraser, was one of the speakers in the second reading of the debate in the House of Representatives last night on the Servicemen's Settlement and Land Sales Bill. He stressed the point that it was felt by the Government that the bill would fulfil the pledge given to the men who had gone* on service overseas, but he made it clear that the Government would be prepared to consider any alternative suggestions which would achieve tiic objectives of die measure. The debate was adjourned when the House rose at 10.30 p.m. and will be resumed on Wednesday. Mr. Fraser expressed the hope that by sitting reasonably long hours it would be possible to reach the committee stage about Thursday night or Friday. He said that in the intervening period the Social Security Amending Bill and the Pensions Reciprocity. Bill with Australia would be introduced. The Industrial, Confiliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill would come on after the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Bill had beep disposed 6f. Th reply to the Loader of the Opposition, Mr. S. G. Holland, the Prime Minister said the intention was lo put both the last-named bills through. He could not sec any hope of finishing (he session next week. Besides the bills he had mentioned there was the Pensions Bill, but he did not expect much discussion on that or on some ol the other measures. He was aiming at finishing the session by August 24 or 25.
