SECRETARY CHOSEN

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS POST (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 21. The appointment is announced of Mr. A. D. Mclntosh as Secretary of External Adairs. This post has been set up in accoi’dapce with the terms of the External Affairs Act recently passed by Pai-liament. Under the control of the Minister of External Affairs, the secretary will discharge departmental duties and functions relating to the new Ministry which embraces inler-Imperial and foreign affairs, including communications between this Government and overseas Governments, the representation of New Zealand in other countries and the representation of other countries in the Dominion. Mr. Mclntosh, who lias also been secretary to the War Cabinet since February last, has been on the staff of Hie Prime Minister’s Department since the beginning of 1935. During absences on missions ovex-soas of the former permanent head, Mr. C. A. Berendscn, who is now High Commissioner for New Zealand in Australia, Mr. Mclntosh has carried out the duties in connection with the Imperial affairs branch of the Prime Minister’s Department and the war secretariat. It is understood ttiat, so far as staffing arrangements are concerned, the work of the External Affairs Department and that of the War Cabinet secretariat will be undertaken conjointly by the existing staff of the Prime Minister’s Department.
