NEW YORK’S NEW GAOL
NEW YORK, March 20. New York State’s new £2,500,000 gaol stands empty because there are not enough criminals to justify its opening. High in. snow-covered hill country near the Hudson Rivbt" town south of Poughkeepsie, Grecnhaven prisons 50-acre buildings hear only howling winds, and occasional footsteps its 22 maintenance men make their rounds.
No expense was spared to make Greenhaven America's most modern gaol. . Inside arc great kitchens, 50 special, punishment cells, accommodation for 1000 prisoners—and a hospital complete with operating theatre. Topping Greenhaven’s great walls are 12 modernistic guard towers equipped with searchlights, sirens, gun emplacements, bullet-proof .glass windows and radios.
Construction stopped after Pearl Harbour, but three weeks’ work would make the huge buildings ready for occupation. Officials say its only possible use now would be as an enemy alien concentration camp.
