Furlough Party Match

T.he Rugby football match between members of the N.Z.E.F. furlough party and an Air Force team, to have been played on Saturday, has been postponed on account of the reception to be held for the returned men that day, and will take place on August 7. Returned men of the armed forces will be the guests of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union on Saturday. Gisborne Race Dates The Poverty Bay Turf Club has readvice from thp New Zealand Racing Conference that February 15 and April 22 have been allotted to the club for race meetings in Gisborne during the 1943-44 season. The Poverty Bay Hunt Club’s application for a date in the spring was unfortunately turned down. This was due to the curtailment of racing throughout tile Dominion by one half of the days normally allotted.

Liability for Overseas Service “I have to inform you that all category A men, that is, those who are Grade 1 and between the ages of 21 and 40 inclusive, are liable to_ be dispatched for service overseas.” wrote the' Acting Minister of Defence in reply to an inquiry from Mr. Clyde Carr, M.P., about the liability for overseas service of men who are 40 years of age. The Minister wrote: "Owing to the difficulty of obtaining the full requirements for the next draft, it is possible that some men who are 40 years of age will be posted to that reinforcement, and no doubt a few may not have had a great deal of training. This, however, will be completed overseas before the men are posted to serve with units in the field.”

Seventy Gisborne Cars With billeting arranged for more than 300 delegates to the North Island conference of the Women’s Institute to be held in Gisborne next week, the next lash ahead of the Poverty Bay federation is the arrangement of cars to transport the visitors to their billets. Seventy cars are required. Those offering to assist in the transport will be provided with petrol licenses, and they are asked to notify’ representatives of the transport committee by noon to-mor-row, names of those to contact being mentioned in an advertisement on page 1 of this issue. The greatest number of the visitors are to arrive by special train next Tuesday and they are to leave by a special train on the following Friday. The conference will open at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, with a welcome by the Mayor, Mr N. H. Bull, and will continue throughout Wednesday and Thursday. Poverty Bay members who are not delegates will have t.he opportunity of attending the conference.
