' Heavy bombers of the Mediterranean Air Command to-cl.i} bombed military objects in Rome and its vicinity. A mais m ling yard was the principal target. It is of great importance to the Axis war effort, particularly for .the movement of German troops. Warning leaflets were dropped over the city prior to the raid. The pilots and bombardiers employed on this mission were particularly instructed to avoid damaging icli_,ious and cultural monuments. _ The first flight of bombers for Home took oif at 11.a.m. to-day to deliver the first blow against the last of the g'j'P communication centres of Italy to feel the weight of the Allied air assault. The railway junction bombed carries an enormous military traffic. Its railway communications and sidings arc among the most important in Europe. In the meantime the Allied forces in Sicily continue to advance steadily and further gains are reported on all sectors oi the front from Port Empedoele to the vicinity ot. Catania. The Eighth Army is reported to be within three miles of Catania and to have cleared the enemy from the vital Cerium air-fields. „ , The Canadians operating in the centre of the front na\e captured Piazza Armerina, some 20. miles further inland from Caltagirone, and .the Americans on the left have occupied t lie important road and rail junction of Caitanissetta. Both the Canadians and the Americans arc pushing forward in the direction of the key-point of Enna.
