TO GOVERN SICILY
allies prepared SPECIAL ADMINISTRATION (10 a.m.) LONDON, July 18. It is officially announced that an Allied military Government, known as “Amgot,” has been established in occupied Sicily under the joint administration of Major-General Lord Rennell, a former Ambassador to Rome, and Brigadier-General McSherry. of the American Army. Amgot will enforce the orders and proclamations of the military Governor, General Alexander.
Reuter’s correspondent in Algiers says that under Allied rule no poliiL cal activity of any kind will be permitted in occupied Sicily. The Fascist Party will be abolished and the Fascist leaders removed from official posts. The civil Government, will be carried on through local officials who are not Fiscists. Hundreds of British and American officers and men have been trained secretly for months to run the administration of Sicily. They will move forward with the advancing troops. General Alexander issued a proclamation assuring the Italians that they may pursue their normal vocations fearlessly so long as they comply with military orders. Those accused of crimes against the Allies will be tried by specially constituted Allied military courts.
