MARTINIQUE PEOPLE
VICHY LAWS REPEALED
(By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (10.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 16. The new High Commissioner ol Martinique appointed by the French Committee of Liberation, M. Hoppenot, has restored Republican government in Martinique and repealed the laws of Admiral Robert's administration. M. Hoppenot said that the cruiser Emile Bertin and the training ship Jeanne d’Arc, seven tankers and other ships attached to Admiral Robert's fleet are being sent to the United States soon for repair and reconditioning for use by the Allies. No sabotage hacl been committed on any of the vessels since their arrival in 1940. M' Hoppenot said that 9.7 per cent of the residents of Martinique are giving allegiance to the French National Committee. The only guarantee sought from him was that no reprisals should be taken against the supporters of Marshal Petain, which he gladly gave. All political prisoners had been freed immediately he arrived.
