RIGHT TO VOTE

WIVES OF AMERICANS

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 15. A number of New Zealand girls have married United States’ servicemen and the question has been, raised as to whether they will have the right to vote at the general election. If they were British subjects before their marriage their nationality would not have been changed by their marriage. Therefore, it is stated, they have the right- to vote as long as they arc -21 years of age or over and have the necessary residential qualification. They should, however, notify the registrar of electors of their change of name. , It was explained last May by ttie Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. Ei Parry, that according to United Stales law marriage docs not confer citizenship upon a foreign wife and consequently a British woman marrying a United States citizen retains her British nationality and 'travels on a British passport.

The Dominion headquarters of the National Party has approved the choice of Mr. R. J. Glasgow, of OneWhero, as the party’s official candidate fnr the Raglan seat at 1 the general election. Mr. Glasgow is a director ji me New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company/ Limited, and for many years he has taken an active part in local body work.
