He was an Otago representative at Rugby football and Was closely associated with the activities of' the Y.M.C.A. for 17 years.' He is a former president of the Otago Labour Representation Comniittee and resigned from the presidency of the 'Otago Trades Council to enter the army. Before'joining the army he was also a member of > the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council.
