Election Candidates
Sir, —I noticed in the Herald the oilier night a reference to the “official Labour candidate" for the-Gisbotne scat. I wonder if anyone can tclJ me just what the procedure is to discover t!ie official Labour' candidate in lliis electorate. 1 am told by National Party supporters that under their system each of 20 or 30 branches appoints delegates to a selection corrtmittee, that anybody can. be nominated as the candidate, and that the selection is made by elected representatives of all the members in the party. This procedure is followed even in the case of a sitting member, who has to submit himself' to reselection. I can understand this method. It seems fair and democratic and means that the candidate is controlled' by the rank and file of the party and not vice versa, In other electorates I. notice that the Labour Party, too, seems lo make a selection of its' candidate, in some cases holding a postal ballot. In Gisborne, however, the parly, ns far’ as I can discover, % ignored and its supporters* are exncctcd to vote blindly for : a candidate in whose selection they have had no say. •Is it not possible to have this procedure changed? PUZZLED.
