Mr. Fraser said that Mr. Smith had given long service, both as a private member and as a Minister of the Crown, showing practical knowledge and ability in the administration of the portfolio oi Labour. . Mr. Fraser expressed his sincere sympathy and that of the Government to Mrs. Smith and members of the family, three of whom were serving with the armed forces overseas.

Mr. Smith was born in Now Plymouth in 1579 and was a son of the late Mr. E. M. Smith, M,11.U. lie was for 20 years in the railway service and was at one time a member of tlie national executive of the A.S.E.S. In October, 1018, Mr. Smith entered Parliament, when lie defeated the late Mr. ,1. S. Connett at the by-election following the death of Mr. 1L •!. Jl. Obey. He was member l'oi; tije New Plymouth constituency uiitil. 1935, except during the period from 1025-28. After the 1928 election Mr, Smith was appointed Chairman of Comhiittees and on the resignation of Sir Joseph Ward in May, 1930, he was anpoiiiteVL Minister of fmb our in the United Cabinet. Mr. Smith was Minister of Labour until September, 1031, when the Coalition Cabinet was formed. lie was then without Ministerial rank for a while, but, was subsequently Minister of Employment and of Education.

The death in Wairoa Hospital this morning <}f Mr. Charles Cecil (Clugl Boyser .removed one of the best known and most popular figures in (the Wairoa district. Mr. Boyser, who was 55 years of age, in his early clays in tlie district conducted the Wine and Spirit Company. On selling out to the present company he took up farming on the Hunter Brown estate at “Happy Home.” and on relinquishing fanning returned to Wairoa. where for the past four or five years he had operated a taxi business. He was keenly interested in all sport, being an office bearer in the Rugby Union and Rod and Gun Club, and hacl been closely associated with the Maori race in its various activities. He is survived by his widow and a family of seven, including one son serving overseas. The funeral will leave St. Peter’s Church at 2 p.m. on Monday for Wairoa cemetery.
