NEW STANDARD SET BIG BETTING INCREASE NO ONE-DIVIDEND EVENT A new standard was set for racing in Gisborne on Saturday, when the Poverty Bay Turf Club held its autumn meeting on the MaKaraka course. Both the attendance and the totaiisator returns were the best for nearly two decades, while for the first ' time in that period the racing went through without a single-dividend race. Scratehings were sometimes heavy, particularly in the last race when 11 of the horses accepted failed lo go to the post, but the acceptances were so good that the numbers did not Call below the minimum for the payment of two dividends. Tolalisator returns totalled £15,853, compared with £12,503 at the last meeting in February, an increase of £3355. There were no comparative figures for last year, as prior to February there had been no racing in Gisborne for 15 months, but Saturday’s figures are double those for any one day for many years before that. Dye). , After some troubde at the post, the in starters lined up well for the Railway Hack Cup Handicap and allowed Aqueduct to get away first, followed by Sir Mark and Support in that order. Earlscourt, however, scon came into the running, mid along the back was in behind Aqueduct, with Support, Llandine, Makarora, Sir Mark, and lien Fenelia following in that order. Silver Mist and Roeon were very heavily backed with little between them on the machine for the Autumn Handicap, Roeon being tiie slightly better supported. Pompit got away first from the barrier, with Silver Mist, Ex Pupil, Proclamation, Roeon and Corouace in that order, but it was not long before Silver Mist tool: the lead, whirl-, he held to the finish. Pompit remained handy, while Ex Pupil stayed in the hunt until they straightened up for home. Coronacc, lying fifth at that stage, came wide out to challenge Pompit for second place, and failed only by a nose. Silver Mist being II lengths ahead in the winning position. Eleven scratehings left eight runners in the Farewell Hack Handicap. Kinueif got tiie best of the start, with Siyana left a few lengths behind the field. Dash Up, who followed Kinueff out, was ahead of Sir Standfast and Royal Sister, who made the running for a time but with Kinueff not far behind. At that stage Sir Standfast was well back in the field, but when turning into the straight came wide out to make an exceptionally fast finish, gaining the decision by 1J lengths from Dash Up and Royal Sister third half a length further back.
