Hawke’s Bay Earthquake The twelfth anniversary of the disastrous earthquake in Hawke's Bay. which destroyed Hie greater part of Napier and caused great damage at Hastings, occurred yesterday. Taking place shortly before 11 o'clock on the morning of February 3, 1931, the earthquake was responsible for the deaths of 283 people. Hundreds were injured and many left homeless.
Turf Club Visitors Special arrangements to avoid discomfort and disappointment are being made by the Poverty Bay Turf Club for visitors arriving by the special train from Hastings on Saturday. This train is due to reach the Makaraka station, which is alongside the racecourse. at noon, and as the first race is not timed to start until 1 o'clock patrons will have ample time to secure refreshments, which will be available on the course. The catering is being done by the Poverty Bay Women’s Representative Committee, while the refreshment stalls are to be
controlled by the women’s section of the It.S.A. The total isator staff has been increased, and the club is determined that the running of the programme will be kept up to time to permit the prompt dispatch of the special train on the return journey.
