SLOWER TIMES

ATHLETIC TRACK MEETING CYCLE EVENTS POPULAR Conditions were very trying for the weekly sports meeting of the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club held oil Saturday and this more or less accounted for the slower times, although the finishes were very close in most events. The most exciting finishes were in the cycling events, which continued, to attract new competitors. Saturday’s surprise was i the well .known and one of New Zealand’s best cyclists, Gordon Patrick, and although he came out to the start of the first ia*.c unknown to most of the spectators and officials, he was soon recognised, by two exAucklanders who knew his ability. It was quite a few years since ‘Gordon Patrick hair competed in track racing, but he had lost little of his dash and racing wisdom. Ho did not race “flat out” in either of the events be competed in, but was content just to “try” the field. With such riders as Veen, Chatfield and Knight competing/there will be a‘ great race soon. Perhaps these lads are’ waiting to give Gisborne a taste of. their ability on Boxing Day when it is hoped that they will all compete at the patriotic meeting. 1 A. novel event which met with much enthusiasm was the women’s one-lap cycle race. The finish Was a “beauty" and the girls received a great applause from the Crowd. It was hoped that this event would be repeated at future meetings. The second distance (220yds.) of the Greig trophy, was \von by S. Hunter in fine style and as Sutherland leads him by one point it will be interesting to see how these two fare when they meet in the final distance (300 yds ), in the hew year. Results:—
