“UNFAIR” FIGHTING MAORI “SCALP-HUNTERS” SYDNEY PRESS COMMENT (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Special Australian Correspondent.) (2.40) SYDNEY, Oct. 5. General Rommel’s outraged feelings against the “unfair” fighting methods of the “Maori scalp-hunters” have l-eceived scant sympathy in Australia. “New Zealanders apparently refuse to carry on war according to the rules that the Nazis would prescribe for them,” comments the Sydney Morning Herald editorially to-day. “So dead are these warriors to sense of all gentlemanly behaviour that they penetrate a position and simply kill everybody—whereas killing everybody, it should be understood, is the privilege for the ITerrenvolk. “The hearts of the Nazis turn soft and they sicken when they themselves are ’victims of the ruthlessness which they employ against the conquered nations. It is the old familiar German mixture of whining and bullying in turns. Surely the recollections of the formidable fighting qualities of the New Zealand troops in the last war should have forewarned the Nazis of the consequences of provoking another quarrel with them.”
