WAIROA NEWS

Reports received from various parts of the Wairoa district indicate that lambing has been exceptionally satisfactory and that, with a good flush of grass, excellent stock should be available for the opening of the killing season.

Advice has been received by his parents that gunner Johnston, who was wounded in action, is now progressing satisfactorily at a convalescent camp. Mr. D. J. Cummings, Commissioner of Police, has left Wairoa on his return to Wellington—Mr. E. Hyde, Napier, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. F. Berry, Wairoa. The death has occurred at Warkworth of Mr. Basil Shaw at the age of 44 years. Mr. Shaw, a native of Wairoa, was for many years in the employ of the local branch of Dalgety and Company. He was a keen tennis enthusiast and won many local championships. He was a returned soldier from the Great War and had many friends in this district. At the request of the East Coast Centre, the opening day tournament of the Wairoa Bowling Club on Saturday last took the form of a competition in aid of patriotic funds. There was a large number of bowlers present. The winners of the final were Morrison, Johansen, Bainbridge and Patterson (skip). The Croquet Club also held their official opening on the same day, when a most enjoyable time was Bpent by the large number present. Wairoa at present is experiencing a period of early closing on Friday nights by _ a section of shopkeepers. Whether the trial will prove successful or otherwise remains to be learned.
