Muir, Harris street, is returning to-day from a visit to Auckland. Mrs. P. Atkinson, Wellington, is the guest of Mrs. A. S. Muir, Harris street. Nurse Scott, of the Cook Hospital stuff, has tendered her resignation on account of her approaching marriage. On Friday afternoon Miss C. dudgeon was hostess at a small mah-jongg tea at the home of Mrs. R. Brown, Russell street. Miss Betty Bowen, Stout street, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Bowen, "Maraetnha,” Muriwni Second-Lieutenant A. J. Humphrey is spending his leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Humphrey, Kaiti esplanade. Mr. and Mrs. R. Tombleson, Waimata Valley, were recently the guests of the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Gilling--Imm, Waerenga-o-kuri. Mr. and Mrs. W. Maclmirin, Heston, were the week-end guests of the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Bowen, “Maraetaha,” Muriwai. CHEERY FIVE O’CLOCK On Saturday Lieutenant-Commander H, E. Cave and Mrs. Cave were the chief guests at a cheery 5 o'clock party given by Miss P. Barker at her home in Russell street. Mrs. Barker welcomed her daughter’s guests wearing a graceful frock of black wool crepe. Miss Barker looked smart in a simply-cut frock of dull gold clpque. A navy buo and white printed frock and a plain navy coat were worn by Mrs. Cave. Among the guests were Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Irwin; Mesdames A. Barton and W. P. Willock; Miss J. Kahlenberg; Flying Officers K. Struthers and Jenkin; Corporal J. Hornabrook; Messrs. J. Ward and M. W. Howe. COMING-OF-AGE CELEBRATED A very jolly tea party was given by Mrs. W. H. Hyde and Mrs. A. J. Miles at the home of the latter in Harris street at the week-end in celebration of the coming-of-age of Miss Tore Parfitt. The health of the celebrant was proposed by her father, who also presented her with a handsomely decorated paun shell key as a symbol of the attainment of her majority. Mr. F. Boyle responded on behalf of Miss Parfitt, and a toast to "Absent Friends" was proposed by Mr. W. Te Whata. A becoming frock of midnight blue cloque accented with touches of lace was worn by Miss Parfitt. Among the many guests were Mrs. W. Te Whata and Mrs. E. Rice, sisters of the celebrant. DICKENS’ CLUB

In response to the annual appeal for the leper comforts fund £4 was donated by members at the monthly meeting of the Gisborne Dickons’ Club, held at the home of Mrs. E. Hampton, Derby street. It was decided to hold the annual dinner on November 80, and the arrangement of sketches to be presented at the subsequent entertainment was discussed. A sketch from “A Tale of Two Cities” was read by Mesdames A. B. Scott, F. R. Hill and V. Clement. A short musical programme included vocal solos by Mrs. Lyndon. elocutionary items by Mrs. N. Hooper, and pianoforte numbers by Mrs. Hampton, who also acted as accompanist. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Simmons, assisted by Mesdames Hampton and Clement. BRIDE-ELECT ENTERTAINED A pleasant round of parties has been arranged recently for Miss Joan Coleman prior to her marriage to Sergeant Raymond Vail.

At a jolly evening held at the home of Mrs. F. Hutchinson, Wainui Beach, dancing and singing were enjoyed, and during an interval Miss Coleman wns asked to accept an electric iron on behalf of the guests. Gifts for her kitchen were received by Miss Coleman at the informal tea given by Miss L. Coleman at her home in Mangapapa road. Music and competitions provided entertainment. A singing kettle, bearing the good wishes of the guests, was presented to Miss Coleman at the cheery card party given for her by her aunt, Mrs. Twigley, Cobden street. W.A.C. FAREWELLS

A pleasant little ceremony took place at the Soldiers’ Service Club on Saturday afternoon, when Miss Z. Limn was farewelled by her fellow-members of the Women's Auxiliary Corps prior to her departure from Gisborne to undergo a course of training for the Women’s Royal Naval Service. Miss Lunn, who lias been a member of the corps since its formation, was asked to accept a writing case, with the good wishes of her fellow-members. Two initial members of the corps, Misses N. Johnson and L. Whinray, also were farewelled, and each made the recipient of a fountain pen, at the Soldiers’ Service Club, recently. They are at present taking an artillery course as members of (lie Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. INFORMAL PARTY

Music and dancing were enjoyed at the delightful party given by Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Smith at their home in Wainui road on Saturday night for Captain A. Heath and Mrs. Heath. The hostess was wearing a graceful frock of black wool georgette. A smart frock of navy blue cloque, accentuated with a shoulder spray of pink tulips, was the choice of Mrs. Heath. Among the guests were Pilot-Officer and Mrs. Murray, Mr. and Mrs. I. Wallace, Mr. and Mrs. R. Watchman; Mesdames W. A. Bowie, A. Wootton and H. Robinson; Misses A. Slight, E. Matthews, P. De Costa, A. Edwards, N. Hayes, S. Muir, E. Gudgeon; Flying Officers E. Russell, Goodhugh, E. Blenkinsop, Pilot-Officer Eddy and Messrs. A. G. Slight, M. W. Howe, and C. Wallace t Auckland).
