GALLANTRY PRAISED
SUNKEN SHIP’S CREW SANG WHILE SWIMMING (British Official Wireless.) (2 p.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 28. Tributes to the gallantry of British merchant seamen have been paid by officers of a British destroyer who have just returned from Malta. When the recent convoy to Malta was attacked by German aircraft, a merchant • ship was hit by several bombs and sank, immediately. “I cannot speak too highly of the guts of the men in that siiip. They were singing encouragement to each other as they swam for their lives or clung to pieces of wreckage.” said a destroyer officer. The destroyer altogether saved 45 seamen, and those rescued cheered themselves hoarse as the destroyer steamed at full .speed to rejoin the convoy.
