GISBORNE SOCCER
INFANTRY DEFEATED in an interesting game of sot'eer on the Childers Road Reserve on Saturday, a Gisborne team defeated Infantry by five goals to nil, although ,tlie margin of goals did not truly represent the .difference between the teams. The Infantry had many scoring chances which were badly finished off. The Infantry took the initiative from the start, and kept the Gisborne defence very busy for' a time, and Bryan had to he smart, to keep his goal intact. However, from one of his clearing kicks the Gisborne forwards got going, and Mclvor, the opposite goalie, had to save. Gisborne gradually took command, the Infantry Halves having to pay too much attention to the attacking forwards and were unable to feed their own. From one of the Gisborne raids, Jarvie opened the score for Gisborne from a centre pass well out, and towards the close of the spell J. Enston put in a nice high shot. Infantry forwards showed some spirit at the start of the second spell, and' worked nicely into scoring position, J. Watt shooting over the bar. Gisborne swept back, Slade clamming one on to the crossbar and J. Easton, sen., catching the rebound to secure the third Gisborne score. The Gisborne defence, which had played well throughout, continued to.'do-well, while among the .forwards D,. .McLean and J. Easton shone out. Mclvor and Clements were good in defence for the-Infantry. Mr. Sweeney -was ‘the referee.
