BEEF SUPPLIES
MAY BE INADEQUATE CALL FOR PRODUCTION TO MEET NEEDS OF N.Z. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. “The demand for beef of all types is likely to be considerably increased." the Minister of Primary Production, the Hon. W. J. Poison, said to-day when he appealed to beef producers and dairy farmers to make every endeavour to produce sufficient beef and veal to meet the Dominion and export requirements. “With increased beef slaughterings and increased demands likely to be made fqr beef supplies by the armed forces, the supply of beef cattle may fall short of requirements,” Mr. Poison added. “It is reasonable to assume that further demands, for beef for internal requirements can be met only by the curtailment of export beef that would be most, unfortunate and must be avoided if possible.’’ Mr. Poison asked runholders to maintain beef production and increase it where possible. He also appealed to dairy-farmers to produce vealer calves as veal requirements were expected to be in excess of the present production. He suggested the use of cows that would otherwise be culled from milking herds for breeding, and also suggested that sheepfanpers could help by increasing the number o£ cattle normally .carried with their sheep.
