Ja P aa f „ e JF that their continent is next on Japans invasion timetable if eastern Australia falls. Peruvians, Colombians and Ecuadorians are especially strong m this conviction because their countries lie on the western coast of South America The diplomats were expected to relay their fears to Washington through the respective Governments in the nope that the United States will dispatch-greater aid to Australia. The South Americas believe that Japan intends to seize eastern Australia and then strike eastward for bases in New Zealand and other islands such as Fiji and ,_ Sa ™ oa fcF°R: ing eventually to reach the South American coast. Chile’s long coastline is vulnerable. Peru has a large Japanese settlement A foothold anywhere on the coast would then enable Japan to strike at the Panama CanaL
