BRITAIN’S BIGGEST JOB

BASES FOR AMERICANS PLANS FOR OFFENSIVE (British Official Wireless.) O a.m.) RUGBY, Aug. 9. The immediate necessity for the construction of aerodromes, port facilities and camps for the United States land and air forces ip Britain was announced by the Minister of Labour, Mr. Ernest Bevin, in a message to the employers and workers of the building and civil engineering industries.

Describing this as Britain’s greatest job, Mr. Bevin summoned all concerned to accomplish one of the greatest undertakings of the war. The object of the scheme is to convert Britain into a base from which the American land and air forces will operate. The work is already well under way, but to ensure its rapid a’ccomplishmeht, 23,000 building workers, who were due to be called up for the forces, are to be left in their jobs at least until October. Mr. Bevin declared that not a minute must be wasted. Craftsmen must be prepared to abandon the tools of their craft and use the labourer’s pick and shovel. The task was Vitaliy urgent to enable us to mount an early offensive.
