FALL OF TOBRUK
STAND NOT INTENDED (10 a.m.) CAPETOWN, July 3. Major-General De Vfiliers, who recently commanded the Second South African Division in Libya, referring to Tobruk, said: “I have heard it said, 'Why did we not hold Tobruk longer?’ What happened I do not know. I was commander a month before the fall and I know then that it was not conitemplated that Tobruk .should be held if the Evacuation of the Gazala line was decided on. I do not know what happened in the meantime.”
