Lieutenant Arthur F. Allen, who was mentioned in despatches, was a prominent member of the Gisborne Rowing Club, of which he was club captain at the time of his departure for training camp. For some time he was on the engineering staff of the Gisborne Harbour Board, and was latefc with the Public Works Department.
