“RACKET” ALLEGED
MATERNITY HOME FEES CRITICISM IN HQUSE (P.R.) WELLINGTON, this day. The custom of some maternity homes charging patients additional fees to those allowed under the social security scheme was sharply criticised in the Hofise of Representatives when the social security benefits estimates were under discussion. Auckland members quoted cases where' the security allowance was exceeded by £0 6s to £7 7s. Some of these homes were controlled by medical men. During last year no increase whatever was permitted in the scale of tees allowed to be charged legitimately by licensees of private maternity homes which were under contract to the Government. Any tees charged over and above the social security rate were permitted some vears ago in consideration of the fact that balance sheets were presented showing that the licensees could not carry on otherwise.
