THREE U.S. SHIPS SUNK
HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE STRONGER DEFENCES (10.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, June 29. The Navy Department disclosed the loss of three more United States merchant ships. The entire crew of 33 of a medium-sized cargo ship died when the vessel was torpedoed in the Gulf of Mexico on June 22. Ten men were killed aboard a small merchantman which was torpedoed in the Atlantic on May 18. Twenty-eight members of the crew were lost from a medium-sized merchantman which was torpedoed in the Caribbean Sea on June 2. An admission in a German communique to-day that Axis submarines in Atlantic waters are encountering fierce American defence is regarded as an indication of the increased efficiency of the United States antisubmarine forces. While it is undeniable the submarine menace is still serious along the Atlantic coast, the new measures the navy instituted recently, such as convoying along the coasts and the greater use of small boats is expected to check the submarine toll and eventually reduce it sharply. ■
