MATAWAI NEWS

A jolly party was held at the Women’s Institute room in Matawai, when all the children of the village were invited to a Sunday school party, promoter! by Mrs. C. V. Smith, their teacher, as a farewell to three of her scholars, Joy, Maureen and Billy Thomas. Mrs. Smith, assisted by Miss Gibsou, conducted a varied programme of singing games and competitions. Supper was supplied by the parents and dispensed by guild ladies and the elder scholars. Nancy Robb thanked Mrs. Smith for the very happy time she had given them. ■ On Saturday afternoon the Matawai Red Cross sub-centre held its annual meeting in the Women’s Institute room, Miss Mortleman presiding. In her report Miss Mortleman thanked all for their loyal support. Many helpers, she said, lived long distances away and were not even members. She also commended the school children and their teacher, Miss Gibson, for the excellent contributions of work they had sent in and said the adults could learn from them. Approximately 380 garments had been handed in, and Miss Mortleman thanked everyone for the splendid co-operation of members. The election of officers resulted; —President, Miss Mortleman ; vice-presidents, Mesdames E. E. Williams, H. Bulst, and A. E. Gibson; secretary, Miss Gibson; committee, Mesdames J. W. Smith, E. A. Ewen, R. Mortleman, H. O. Rowley, and Miss B. Davenport. Miss Gibson was appointed the delegate to attend the Gisborne centre. A hearty vote of thanks was extended to Mr. Ewen, who audited the hooks. Afternoon tea was served and members took away more wool and garments, and it was arranged that spinning would be begun at the next meeting: Mrs. Rowley offering her spinning wheel and Mrs. R. Mortleman the first fleece.
