STRANGE SIGHT
HOLES IN THE GROUND RESULT OF ’QUAKE (P.A.) PALMERSTON N., this day. As a result of the earthquake a strange sight was discovered on Thursday moaning on the farm of Mr. J. Seymour at Opiki, a few miles from the city. Over an area of nearly half a mile funnel-shaped holes appeared in the ground and through these sand and water had been thrown up. Judging by the area covered they spouted to a considerable height. Four farms in line with Mr. Seymour’s were not affected. Mr. Seymour believed that the spouts acted as safety valves. ' The water has gone, but the sand is still easily perceptible. It is believed that the spouting came from a considerable depth, as when bores were made for water some time ago, sand was not reached until the bore was 180 Ct. down.
