U.S. RAID ON TOKIO
SECRET SIGHTS REMOVED AIRMEN DECORATED (9.30) WASHINGTON. June 28. The War Department decorated 23 members of Brigadier-Generhj Doolittle's crews who raided Tokio. It is revealed that all the raiding planes, 825 medium bombers, \yere equipped with improvised ' bombsights costing 20 cents. ’ It was explained that the Norden sights on the planes were removed because the plahes were to fly af a low altitude, which was remarkable. Thus the sight would not be greo+w needed and it also seemed inevitable that some of the planes might fall into Japanese hands. Actually none did,
