Axis itmoured units are advancing in at least three columns, says a Cairo hiessage. They ate passing through •Mussolini’s barbed Wire between Sidi Omar and Fort Maddelena, heading in the general direction of Mersa Matruh. Reuter’s Cairo correspondent adds that General Rommel is advancing with everything he can move. The Allied policy is to fight on the most Useful ground, irrespective of territorial gains or losses. The enemy appears to be making an Wil-out attempt to progress as far eastward as possible. The next 24 hours will reveal whether General Rommel’s ambitions are directed towards the Nile or are limited to the Mersa Matruh area. The Evening Standard’s military .'writer declares that General Rommel has a hew model Junkers 88 divebomber which automatically pulls but bf the dive when the bomb is released, enabling the pilot to concentrate oh the target. The new model played an important part in General Rominel’s advance in the past few days. He is no doubt relying on it to open the road to Egypt. A Rome communique claims the bcchfcatibrt bf Solium, Sidi Batrani, and Halfaya. The communique states that the Remaining resistance of the Eighth Arfhy on. the Libya'n-Egyptian frontier has heehi overcome. After the eabthre'jOf-'Gapuzzo,. Solium, and HalflPqlifre Axis ’ forties are continuing the pursuit of the enemy, who is retiring westwards. Sidi Barrani was captured and the area southwards has been passed. The Axis air forces bombed objectives at Mersa Matruh.
