LAMB VALUES HIGHER MATAWHERO STOCK SALE Values for good store iambs were higher at the Matawhero stock sale yesterday, competition being stimulated by the activity of a team of Wairoa buyers, who also were operating on hold-over two-tooth ewes and wethers. The rise in values of good forward lambs was estimated at Is 6d iter head, bringing them up to the rates of 12 months ago, while in some cases yesterday's offerings were worth even more. Prices for medium and cull lnmbs did not change much .from those of last week. Competition for the small number of wethers was keen, but the ewes on offer were mainly of low condition, and prices were not high. The store sheep entry totalled 3000. Values ranged as follows:—Best wether lambs, to 10s 2d : well-grown store-condition-ed wether lambs, 13s to 14s lOd: medium, 7s 6d to 10s; culls. 3s to 7s; well-grown ewe lambs, woolly, to 16s 1 Od; shorn ewe lambs, 10s to 13s 6d; culls. 6s to 3s Cd; small twotooth ewes, culls. 15 Od to 17s 4d; mixedaged ewes, 6-tooth to 4-year, low condition, 10s 6d; mixed aged ewes, 4-tooth to 6-tooth, low condition, 13s Id; two-tooth wethers, to 16s 9d. Some of the best lines realised the following prices:— Lambs. —Woolly ewe lambs, from Mr. A. S. Monk, 16s lOd; shorn ewe lambs, well grown, nice order, 16s; woolly wether lambs, well-grown, displaying seed, from Parikanapa, 14s lOd; woolly wether lambs, with seed, from Mr. F. Shaw, Rakanroa. 13s 8d; 101 ewe lambs, good even line, from Mr. J. Ovcry, Tolaga Bay, 15s 7d; 86 ewe lambs, from Mr. H. Telford. 13s 9d; 94 wether lambs, same vendor, 10s 2d; 41 ewe lambs, late shorn, fair, 12s 9d; 163 shorn woolly lambs, from Mr. V. C. R. Mitford, 15s 8d; 213 do., 11s 10d; 234 do.. 10s; medium quality, high country ewe lambs, from Mr. P. W. McLaughlin. Rakanroa. 13s 7d; 35 Southdown cross lambs, from Mr. C. Westrup. jun., 11s 2d; Romney ewe lambs, same vendor, 12s 3d; 167. well-grown wether lambs, from Mr. A. D. Sherriff, 13s. Pat Markets
The fat sheep market attracted only a small yarding, for which there was no alteration in values. Fat ewes sold from 8s 6d to 10s 7d. the top figure being secured for a pen from Mr. V. C. R. Mitford. Southdown cross lnmbs reached 19s lOd. An offering of 30 station cattle attracted attention, ami they sold from £7 to £7 15s, while Jersey prices were unaltered at S 3 to S 4. Poor Pig Market The pig market was a dragging one, and values were low in the face of poor competition from a very small representation of buyers. The entry totalled 60 pigs. Prices ranged as foilows:—Good weaners, (p) 15,5; small stores, 19 to 245; porkers, 30s to 335; baeoners, £2 2s Gd.
WAIROA STOCK SALE
At this week’s Wairoa stock sale, tho demand for good lambs was keen, and late rates were maintained. Several pens of ewes came forward, but they were aged, with low mouths, and the demand was poor. Cattle met a free market. There was a fair yarding of both sheep and cattle. Messrs. Williams and Kettle, Limited, quote as follows: —Sheep: Good woolly wether lambs, 15s 4d; medium woolly wether lambs, 10s Gd; small woolly wether lambs, 6s; aged ewes, poor mouths, 5s Id to Gs; fat ewes, 9s Gd. Cattle; Eighteen-month Polled Angus steers. £6; empty cows, £4; Jersey heifers, £2 12s Gd.

The following are the particulars of the third appraisement of the 1941-42 season which commenced at Christchurch on January 13: Number of bales offered, 28,046;' weight, 8.811,2101 b.; value. £479,237 13s 9d; average price per bale, £l7 Is 9.014 d; average per lb., 13.064 d. The offering at the second Christchurch appraisal, which commenced on December 2d, comorised 20,890 hales. The total value was £349,525 18s 4d. the average value per bale, £l6 14s 7.616 d., and the average price per lb., 13.309 d.
HAWKE’S BAY RAM FAIR
HASTINGS, this day. The Hawke’s Bay ram fair concluded at Tomoana showgrounds yesterday when studs were offered. For stud Southdowns, the top price was lllgns. and for Romneys 42gns. Except for a few entries, the quality of Romneys was disappointing. Southdowns were far superior and for three entries a three-figure sum was reached.
