SCHOOL GALA DAY

PROCEEDS OVER £IOO INTERMEDIATE EFFORT Gross takings at the gala day held at tide Gisborne Intermediate School yesterday exceeded £IOO, and the proceeds will be devoted towards building up school amenities. A large number of parents and friends attended the function, which included a varied display of work done by the pupils during the year. The routine work was displayed in the class rooms, and on the blackboards the children themselves had given full reign to the artistic talent with chalk drawings, mainly concerning the festive season. Work done in the arts and crafts room was displayed in the assembly hall, this including many fine specimens done by brush, pen and pencil in metal, wood and raffia, and also in the making of garments. The workmanship was a credit both to the teachers and the pupils. One particularly interesting exhibit was a spinning wheel, from which some of the children had spun their own wool from the raw fleece shorn within the borough. Throughout the afternoon several stalls undertook the sale of a large assortment of goods, and afternoon tea was available, while numerous competitions and games were held. A cooking section was included among the competitions, boys in some cases competing successfully against the girls. All cakes submitted to judging were sold afterwards in aid 'of the school funds.

Many helpers were required to augment the school staff, who, with the headmaster, Mr. F. R. Slevin, had a very busy afternoon. Those conducting the various stalls were: Afternoon tea, Mesdames F. A.
