MAUDE MEMORIAL

OVAL ENTRANCE GATES

FUND ESTABLISHED OVER £2OO IN HAND A fund is being created for the purpose of perpetuating the memory of the late Mr. H. E. Maude, whose foresight, energy and financial ability over a long period gave the Poverty Bay Cricket Association and the Poverty Bay Rugby Union assured security of tenure over playing fields that are a credit to the town. A joint committee, comprising members of the Rugby Union and Cricket Association, was set up recently with this end in view, and already the committee has in hand upwards of £2OO, subscribed by sports bodies, and associates and friends of Mr. Maude.

The proposed memorial is to take the form of handsome gates at the Roebuck road entrance to the Oval, and is to be known as the H. E. Maude Memorial Gates. They will comprise a double wrought 1 iron gate, 10ft. wide and 7ft. high, with a smaller 4ft. wide gate on either side, supported by four reinforced concrete pillars. There is to be a concrete approach to the gates 27ft. long by 10ft. wide. A handsome design has been selected, based on drawings secured from one of the best known English firms in this class of work, Messrs. L. Smith, Limited, by Mr. W. Barrington Miller when he was in England some time ago. Estimates of cost have been obtained by the committee, and not less than £3OO will be required to complete the work. Although a substantial portion has been raised and the committee is confident .that the full • amount required will be forthcoming, money is still needed before the work can proceed. No appeal is being made to the public, in view of the many demands being made on the residents of Gisborne, but the committee feels that many people would appreciate the opportunity of subscribing to a memorial that would serve as a lasting tribute to the memory of a fellow-citizen who had so worthily served the interests of all sections of the community. The secretary of the fund, Mr. D. A. Wells, will be pleased to receive any subscriptions forwarded to him.
