He was Second-Lieuten-ant Donald Forrester McFarlane, and served with the New Zealand Engineers from the establishment of the First Echelon of the Expeditionary Force. He was one of four sons, two of whom met their death while serving with the Royal Air Force. One brother was shot down over Kiel during a Royal Air Force raid in the early months of the war, and another was killed in an aircraft accident in New Zealand. The fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. McFarlane is with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and is serving as an instructor at the New Plymouth air station.
Second Son Missing
Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Porter, Tokomaru Bay, have received advice that their second son, Lance-Corporal R. T. Porter, is missing in Libya, and is believed to be a prisoner of war. Lance-Corporal Porter has been a member of the Long-Range Desert Patrol for many months. He enlisted from Gisborne, where prior to the war he was employed by Messrs. Dalgety and Company, Limited. He attended the Gisborne High School, and was prominent in Rugby football and cricket. Later he showed considerable promise as a golfer, and captained a senior club cricket team. Yesterday Mr. and Mrs. Porter were notified that their elder son, SecondLieutenant F. R. Porter, was reported missing in Libya. He was serving with an infantry unit.
