FLYING COLUMNS
COMMANDOES IN DESERT HARRYING AXIS LINES (Reed. Dec. 2, 9 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 1. The unit which Captured General Von Ravenstein, commander of the 21st Panzer division in Libya, is one of the armoured flying columns [ harrying the Germans far in the rear of their main battle positions, says Reuter’s correspondent with the Bth Army. The flying columns are similar to the Boer War commandoes. Travelling far and fast and often at night they are terrorising German tank units which go in larger tight formations for the night and send up flares as a precaution against surprise attack. The British raiders welcome the flares, because they aid in the location of the Germans, after which the tanks sweep in with deadly fire against the Germans’ close-packed vehicles.
