KEY-MEN FOR E.F.S.
HOME GUARD MEMBERS COLONEL SPEAKS OUT “Recently it has come to my notice that a number of Home Guardsmen have been approached and told by Emergency Precautions Scheme officials that they are required in the E.P.S., and must leave the Home Guard,” said Lieutenant-Colonel J. H. Herrold, D. 5.0., director of the 2A groups of the Home Guard, interviewed in Rotorua. “It is now necessary to state publicly that this practice must cease immediately, and that no man can be released from his attestation in the Home Guard under any circumstances whatsoever without 'my consent. Home Guardsmen are warned, therefore, to take no notice whatever of any attempts to entice them from the Home Guard organisation.”
The correct method to adopt by E.P.S. officials when in doubt if a man was in the Home Guard, and they considered that he was a keyman necessary to their organisation, said the director, was for application to be made to the Guardsmen’s Battalion Commander, who would make the necessary recommendation to the Group Director. “I shall at all times be only too ready to co-operate in any way possible, but the correct procedure must be strictly adhered to,” LieutenantColonel Herrold concluded.
